It all started with the true story back in 1833…

The place is Tolpuddle, Dorset, England. Where a political persecution with a vengeful and punitive conspiracy ensued against six humble farm workers efforts to form a workers’ union. As a punishment, in a rigged court trial they were sentenced to seven years in a prison colony in Australia. The play will honor the Tolpuddle heroes and the sacrifices they made for the trade union

How

Walk-on Part Productions has joining forces with US and UK counterparts to bring the story to life in an original musical production, Tolpuddle! the Musical.

Our Goal

To reach as many college and high school performing arts departments as possible, (there are thousands) and multiplied by the amount of students they have who read it  etc, multiplied by the number of people who attend the play,

In an effort to increase awareness in young people and raise the profile of the union, ultimately the aim is that we promote the play to be produced by the dramatic arts department, and performed in as many colleges and schools as we can across the US, the UK, Europe, Australia, Canada, and world-wide, exposing the Tolpuddle story to a whole new generation of potential union members.

The Value

When the subject of the Tolpuddle Martyrs was recently raised in the British Parliament, Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn publicly affirmed once again his avid support and enthusiasm for keeping their story alive.

In all major events and parades, the carrying of the large colorful union banners plays a very significant part in the visual representation of each union.

On to the banners and their role in the play...

The major British, European and US labor unions will be invited to be at the forefront of sponsorship, and will be represented on stage at the end of the play by joining in at the end of the finale; proudly unfurling their union banners and carrying them; entering at the rear of the stage, parading forward and marching down into the audience, while the final musical number plays.

The Martyrs tale has many parallels to the modern-day union experience. No doubt each worker and each family has a unique understanding of the sacrifices that are made.

In today’s political climate the time is ripe for a major union revival.

Union education and enthusiasm is vital in the recruitment of new membership.

Through this musical production we aim to start a movement to get young people inspired, so that they understand and believe that…

The first day of your new job, the first thing you do is join the union.
